Happy New Year to all of you !!!!
The kids seem fresh and are launching into a new phase of learning.
We started the first day of school sharing all that we did during our winter break. It was fun and amusing to know all the experiences - travelling to new places, gathering, sharing information of places visited with their family and many more.
We have continued our gardening session from our last unit on "plants". This week, they worked on understanding the whole concept of compost and how it is useful for their plants to grow healthy.
The children have started inquiring into our new Unit of Inquiry. The unit is on "communities", which falls under the transdisciplinary theme, "How we organize ourselves". The students first tweeked into the word - organize and tried to make connections with how and where do we need to organize. The students came up with examples like birthday party, organizing things in your wardrobe or in a refrigerator, or also when we're working on a project.
The next day, we read a book called, "The Great Kapok Tree", which helped them understand about how a community of animals worked toward a common purpose - to save their home. They listed down communities they belong to like family, school, friends, ECAs and other communities such as firemen, policemen, waiters, etc.
They took a tour around school to explore different communities that work under a big one. They explored areas and found out how teaching and non teaching staff work towards a common purpose and how they're organized under one roof.
We also read a book or saw a video, " The Town and City Mouse", where they got a chance to compare two different communities.
They were introduced to fractions such as 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4th. We read a book, "Give me Half', and " The Doorbell Rang", which helped us to understand that anything that is a part of a whole is called a fraction. They did many activities related to fractions.
We have been working on short vowel sounds.
We never even realised when the week has come to an end.
Happy reading !!!!
